Hashtags hashtags hashtags. They are like mustard. You either love them or hate them. I’m somewhere in the middle. Back in the early days, circa 2012, I used every hashtag I could think of #iphoneography #instagood #instamood – pretty much any tag with the word #insta at the front!
With Instagram’s new ‘algorithm’, it feels like all everyone is talking about is hashtags. Where to put them (caption or comment), when to use them, which ones to use, which ones not to use, how many you should use. blah blah blah. Currently you can add 30 hashtags to your instagram posts. There are many debates as to how many you should use but hey they give you 30 for a reason!
Hashtags are a great way for people to see your content, engage and if they like what they see they will follow you. Beware though, you may find a few follow / unfollow lurkers in the mix. Depending on which hashtags you use, if a hashtag becomes too popular, your photo will disappear into the deepest darkest realms of Instagram after just a few minutes. Take the hash tag #LOVE for example. It has 1.4 billion photos attached to that tag! 1.4 BILLION! If you use that tag your image will be gone in a matter of seconds!
Over the past few months I have really upped my hashtag game! I’ve been mainly sticking to hashtags that have less than 150K photos associated with them and WOW.
My reach has rocketed from around 998 to just over 12,000 accounts and all that engagement has come from using my 30 hashtag allowance!
If you want to see your accounts insights you need to upgrade to a business account (free). You can also see who your audience is, where they are from, how old they are and more importantly what time they are online!
I’ll keep you posted on how I get on but at the moment 2019 is all about the #hashtags.
