It’s been seven days since I deactivated my seven year old Instagram account that housed 49,271 followers…
If you are new to this blog and thinking ‘why the hell would she do such a thing’ – you can read all about it here in Part One.
Since I poured my little heart out about my love / hate relationship with Instagram I have received some lovely messages of support and encouragement – from those who also struggled with ‘the curse of the suggested user’ to those who have obsessed with their follower count for years.
Every single message has been positive and I know deep down that I have made the right decision.
When I launched this blog back in June 2017, I changed my Instagram account to a business account. By doing this I was able to see, in detail, just how well each post was doing.
Known as ‘Insights’ an Instagram business account allows you to see:
Profile Visits: The number of times that your profile was viewed.
Follows: The number of accounts that started following you.
Reach: The number of unique accounts that have seen any of your posts.
Impressions: The total number of times that your post has been seen.
You can also see your top follower locations along with the age range and gender of your followers.
It’s now time for the interesting stuff. *Spoiler alert* It will put everything into perspective…
Below are a selection of images that I posted on my original account (ohsolovelyhelen) with 49,271 followers and my new account (ohsolovelyhelen_) which currently has less than 1K followers.
ARE YOU SHOCKED?? Like seriously I have no words! You would think that my two accounts had a similar follower count and not 48,000 between them!
I feel angry more than anything. Angry that I got so upset over a free app from the App Store. I literally OBSESSED over the numbers (one of the downsides to having a business account). If a post failed I hit that archive button. Where were all my followers hiding? The f**king moon!?
I hope the above images change your mind about Instagram and puts things into perspective? In my opinion unless you are a Kardashian or a freelance blogger who uses Instagram as an extra source of income, follower count means absolutely NOTHING if no one is engaging with your content.
Give me community any day! Want to know my advice?
Engage, engage engage…Take the time to reply to those who comment and comment back on their photos. Find your niche and make some friends. Friends that could turn into real friends.
… and most importantly,
STOP OBSESSING about the numbers and post for you.
